At least 62 kidnap victims have regained their freedom in Katsina State after a Nigerian Air Force airstrike struck the hideout of their abductors. The state government confirmed the development on Monday.

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, explained that the operation targeted the camp of notorious bandit leader Muhammadu Fulani at Jigawa Sawai in Danmusa Local Government Area, close to the Zamfara border. The bombardment forced the bandits to scatter, giving the captives a chance to escape in different directions.

Twelve of the freed victims are currently receiving treatment at Matazu General Hospital, while sixteen others are being cared for at an army forward operating base in Kaiga Malamai. The airstrike, which took place around 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, followed an intensified manhunt for Fulani and his group.

Some of the escapees told officials that they were seized during a night raid on Sayaya village on August 11. The gang is also believed to be responsible for a series of attacks across Matazu, Kankia, Dutsinma and parts of Kano State.

The state government announced that more Air Force units have now been stationed in Matazu and Bakori to reinforce security. Troops are also maintaining a presence in the area to support further rescue operations and prevent renewed attacks.
